Design Overview:

1. Left Panel – St. Benedict:

   • The image depicts St. Benedict of Nursia, the founder of Western monasticism. He holds a cross in one hand (symbolizing salvation through Christ) and the Rule of Benedict in the other, representing the guide to a life of humility, prayer, and service.
   • Below St. Benedict are two symbols of his miracles:
     • The Cup: Refers to the poisoned drink he survived by making the sign of the cross.
     • The Raven: Represents the bird that carried away poisoned bread intended to harm him.
   • The Latin inscription, "Ejus in obitu nostro praesentia muniamur," translates to "May we be strengthened by his presence at the hour of our death," invoking his intercession.

2. Right Panel – The Benedictine Cross:

   • The central cross is surrounded by Latin prayer initials, renowned for their protective powers against evil:
     • C.S.P.B.: Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti ("The Cross of the Holy Father Benedict").
     • Around the cross:
       • C.S.S.M.L.: Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux ("May the Holy Cross be my light").
       • N.D.S.M.D.: Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux ("Let not the dragon be my guide").
     • In the border:
       • V.R.S.: Vade Retro Satana ("Begone, Satan").
       • N.S.M.V.: Nunquam Suade Mihi Vana ("Never tempt me with your vanities").
       • S.M.Q.L.: Sunt Mala Quae Libas ("What you offer me is evil").
       • I.V.B.: Ipse Venena Bibas ("Drink your own poison").
     • At the top, the word "PAX" ("Peace") encapsulates the Benedictine motto, representing the ultimate peace of Christ.

3. Central Cross:

   • A central cross unites the two panels, symbolizing Christ’s sacrifice and its centrality to the Christian faith.

• The St. Benedict Medal is famous for its spiritual protection against evil, temptations, and harm. It is commonly used in exorcisms, prayers, and blessings of homes or sacred spaces.
• The inscriptions emphasize faith in Christ’s triumph over sin and Satan, encouraging believers to seek spiritual strength in times of hardship.

The medal is one of the oldest and most honored medals used by Christians and due to the belief in its power against evil is also known as the "devil-chasing medal".

As early as the 11th century, it may have initially had the form of Saint Benedict's cross, and was used by pope Leo IX. The reverse side of the medal carries the Vade retro Satana ("Begone, Satan!") formula which has been used by Christians to ward off evil since the 15th century. Sometimes carried as part of the rosary, it is also found individually.

Catholics are not permitted to perform exorcisms but they can use the Saint Benedict Medal, holy water, the crucifix, and other sacramentals to ward off evil. The Saint Benedict Medal in the middle of a Celtic Cross is believed to be a powerful tool against evil influences.

Any time you use St. Benedict's Medal or Medal-Cross for these particular purposes, tradition invites you to say five Gloria Patri to Jesus Passion, three Hail Mary to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and a Lord's Prayer to St. Benedict. In order to enter more deeply into the spirit of devotion, it is advisable to say these prayers every day.
